LONG SUTTON & DISTRICT CIVIC SOCIETY

The society was formed by a group of local residents of Long Sutton with the intention of preserving all the good things about the town and surrounding area, whilst trying to ensure by their efforts that any proposed changes to the town were made in a way that continued to enhance what is generally regarded as one of the best Market towns in the East Midlands.

The society was founded in 1969 and currently has thirty members.

Meetings are held in the Market House Long Sutton approximately eight per year with the AGM held in January.

An annual exhibition is held in October featuring items of local interest including photographs and historic maps and a display of collectors vehicles some owned by members of the society plus invited guest exhibitors.

The venue this year is the Royal British Legion Long Sutton on Saturday 20th October.

As a registered Charity the society uses any monies raised by events held, to assist the initial actions required to enable applications for the funding of restoration projects in the area, plus any assistance the society is able to give other good causes in the area.

Members of the society are currently engaged in the preparation of an updated edition of the History of Long Sutton

The centre of the town is a conservation area protecting many of the buildings in and around the Market Place, it is also important to ensure sites such as the Shrubberies nature reserve and the Common Pit on the edge of town are not lost to the community.

The society has for many years tried to ensure the preservation of Sneath’s Mill at Lutton Gowts. The mill dated 1779 a brick built octagonal smock mill is unique in Lincolnshire. The society is now actively working to enable the mill to be restored.

The thatched property known as Sheaf Cottage also on the edge of town, and now being lovingly restored by its present owners is yet another beautiful building, that when under threat of demolition because of its very poor condition, was helped by the actions of the society.

The past actions of the society have helped to preserve various building in the area including the Market house and now the Bull Hotel which will be a huge asset to Long Sutton when fully restored.
